Inveterately, the San Diego Black Film Festival
marks the start of film entertainment season. Well, the Human Rights Film Festival went first this year. Regardless, when it begins at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, SDBFF will hit a great milestone—its 10th birthday. That’s a significant achievement—profusion of festivals haven’t made it that far, and SDBFF has grown to become one of the largest black glaze festivals in the country.
This year, the festival will screen a collection of more than 100 shorts, documentaries and unassimilable and animated movies, focusing on the African-American experience and the African Diaspora, all of it anchored by the fest’s Big 8 Films, a highlighted anthology of feature-length pictures including the opening-night cover, Joe Frazier (When the Smoke Clears). SD-BFF also features industry panels and parties, including the annual Handle Superfly bash, as well as an awards dinner and gala, hosted this year by Robin Givens.
